What are European Emission Standards?

Motor vehicles have improved our lives very much after their invention in 1769. However, it was not only positive influence that motor vehicles brought but they have also brought some critical problems.

Emission and its effect on earth

One of the problems are emission that they produce when running their engines. Those fuels, such as diesel or gasoline, are affordable and accessible power to run the vehicle, however, emission which will be exhausted by burning those fuel has been caused serious damages on earth; for example, the depletion of Ozone layer, which protects ecosystem from Sun's ultraviolet radiation, is getting thinner every year.

The beginning of European Emission Standards

To prevent those destruction of the environment, European Union has announced a series of standards since 1992 to define the acceptable limits for exhaust emissions of new vehicles sold in EU and EEA member states. This is called “European emission standards” and it is now widely used in the world as a standard to check the amount of the toxic emission that they produce.

If you would like to check the European emission standards for trucks with gross vehicle weight over 3.5 tons, you may look up for the standards dedicated for Heavy Duty Vehicles which uses Roman numerals (Euro Ⅰ, Euro Ⅱ, Euro Ⅲ, Euro Ⅳ, Euro Ⅴ and Euro Ⅵ), rather than Arabic which is for Light Duty Vehicles (Euro 1, Euro 2, Euro 3, Euro 4, Euro 5 and Euro 6).

Here are the summery of the Euro emission standards for heavy duty trucks:

Emission standards for Heavy Duty Vehicles

As you can see from the chart, European emission standards is defined based on the results of several different test items such as CO (Carbon Monoxide), THC (Total Hydrocarbon), or PM (Particulate Matter). Currently, in 2018, Euro 6 standard is applied in EU/EAA member states and non-compliant vehicles cannot be sold in the said countries.

*The standards do not apply to the vehicles already on the roads.

Now many countries are eager for reducing the amount of toxic emissions to be exhausted in order to prevent global warming. In fact, only those vehicles which are compliant to certain European emission standards can be imported in some countries other than EU/EAA countries. Therefore, if you are thinking to import a used vehicle, it is essential to check if the vehicle meets the euro standard or any other standard that your government asks for.

*The regulation may frequently be updated. Please refer to the latest information that your government authority provides.

Upgrade your vehicles to prevent global warming

2018 has already been challenging. Many countries have suffered from natural disasters like flood, extremely hot temperature or any other extortionately climates. These are often said to be caused by the global warming.

Now it must be the time that we all think about the environment and update your vehicle something a little more environmentally friendly. Small attentions and improvements of each person will surely extend the longevity of our great earth in the long term.

Improvements of driving is also good for environment!
