Import regulations of used vehicles
A surprising news has arrived this month from Kenya.
Kenya Bureau of Standards has announced that they will ban the import of commercial trucks with load capacities of 3.5 ton and above. Although majority of the used vehicles imported in Kenya has been passenger cars, it is the significant change as Kenya has been one of the biggest importers of the Japanese used vehicles.
The rumor of shortening the age limitation of import vehicles from 8 years to 5 years has been whispered but seems like it has postponed for now.
Now you may wonder how the import regulations in other countries are like. Let me share some examples!
Tanzania
In Tanzania, vehicles’ age 8 years old or less are allowed to import. However, it is also possible to import over age 8 years by disbursing excise duties which will be imposed in accordance with its year model.
In order to import a vehicle in Tanzania, it is required to submit the certificate of a pre-shipment road worthiness inspection such as EAA when clearing the customs. Although majority of imported vehicles or cars running in this country is right-hand drive, it is also allowed to drive left-hand vehicles.

Zambia
In Zambia, there is no age limitation for the vehicles to be imported. However, it is also required in Zambia to submit the certificate of pre-shipment inspection like Tanzania. Both right and left handle vehicles are allowed to import in this country too.
Philippines
Philippines are a left-hand drive country although many of the trucks passing on the road are used trucks imported from Japan, where right-hand drive vehicles are used.
How do they make it work? It might sound impossible, but actually they convert the handle from right to left.
All the trucks imported as CBU (complete built up) first arrive at Subic port which is located about 2-3 hours driving from Metro Manila. Subic is the only port/district in the Philippines where right handle vehicles are allowed to be imported. Those trucks imported in Subic have to be converted their handles from right to left inside the Subic district.
As importer license is required to import any vehicles in the Philippines, there are multiple offices of importing companies inside Subic who conduct the business of importing and selling used trucks.

Myanmar
Myanmar had been one of the biggest markets of Japanese used vehicles. However, in 2018, the government has published the new regulation of prohibiting the import of any right handle vehicles regardless their year model. Myanmar is the right drive country so the number of traffic accidents caused by the right handle vehicles was the one of their social problems. This renew of regulation has surely hit the used car market in Japan and the market prices for certain models in Japanese motor vehicle auctions have dropped off drastically.
How did you think about the import regulation of foreign countries?
If you are thinking to import a used truck from Japan, keep your information updated all the time to avoid any possible troubles.
