History of Japanese Trucks

Thank you for visiting our blog page. It's getting a little chilly in Japan. If you visit Japan, you will need a jacket or something to put on.

Today, I would like to share with you how truck have developed in Japan.

Cow Carriage and Carriage (Year: 700s -)
In ancient Japan, horse-drawn carriage culture was transmitted via the Korean Peninsula, but it did not spread that much in Japan, as "horses" themselves were already used as a ride. On the other hand, cow carriage that let carriage be pulled by cow was used as a way of transportation for people in high social class. After that, cow carriages became more common.

Cows were also used in all over the country for carrying baggage or field work for livestock till the end of the Edo period (1603–1868).

Then, western culture was brought in during the Meiji Period (1868–1912). As a result, a Western-style carriage developed quickly.

The First Vehicle Imported in Japan and Vehicles Manufactured in Japan (Year: 1890s -)
Bicycles and motorcycles went on land when trade with foreign countries flourished. Four-wheel vehicles have also been imported at the same time. And “Panhard et Levassor” which is the French merchant, has been imported and recognized as the first gasoline-powered car in Japan.

Wolseley CP type Truck (Year: 1920s -)
Ishikawajima Shipbuilding & Engineering Co., Ltd. had expanded business to the automobile industry based on the funds gained by the economic boom of the First World War. In 1918, a contract was concluded with UK automobile company Wolseley and acquired manufacturing rights of Wolseley vehicle and selling rights. They dispatched employees to on-site to be acquired skills, got necessary machinery and drawings. Then they started to manufacture the Wolseley A9 type car, and the first car was completed in 1922. And also, they ordered drawings of Wolseley CP type 1.5 ton truck and two cars as sample in the following year. Based on that, they completed two prototype trucks and they conducted a driving test of 1,000 km.

Co-Development (Year: 1930s -)
In order to raise the level of domestically produced vehicle, we began to manufacture the Ministry of Commerce and Industry* standard type vehicle. Ishikawajima Automotive Works Co., Ltd., Tokyo Gas Electric Engineering Co., Ltd. and Kwaishinsha which are makers of domestic vehicle, jointly engaged in this vehicle. As a result, TX40 type trucks, TX35 type trucks and BX40 type buses were manufactured and completed in 1932. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry standard type vehicle continued to improve and developed to 5, 6 ton trucks of Isuzu after the war. It was the starting point for mid-size trucks.
*= The Ministry of Commerce and Industry is a cabinet-level ministry government of the Empire of Japan from 1925-1947.

Environment Issues (Year: 2002s -)
The first highway has been fully opened between Nishinomiya and Komaki in 1964. In 1969, the era of full-scale transportation has begun. Along with the completion of highways, heavy trucks were manufactured and a lot of goods were transported through highways. However, Since the 1970s, problems of automobile society such as air pollution and traffic accidents came up to the surface. Today, it is not only Japan but also many other countries deal with this problem as the most important issue to work on.

Trucks are convenient, but we need to think more about the environment. However, even if truck emission regulations become more severe, new truck may be developed to clear exhaust emission regulation values.
