How to solve the problem with DPF?
Have you ever heard “DPF”? DPF stands for Diesel Particulate Filter. And it is device that turns harmful substance (NOx and PM) of exhaust gas into clean air so that there is no harm to nature, animals or human beings. Although it is good for the environment, problems caused by DPF are also reported, so I think that there are many people who hesitate to buy the vehicle with DPF. Today, I will tell about the DPF and solution of caused by DPF.
About the DPF structure
Briefly describing the structure of the DPF, it is just a filter and catches the PM particulates from the exhaust gas with a fine mesh. Because PM particulates are caught by the filter, the exhaust gas that passed through the DPF is said to be clean. It is very good device for the driver and environment.
However, since the filter removes NOx and PM, the filter will clog if it is used for a long time. And this clogging will cause many problems. For example, poor fuel economy, engine will not blow, and engine does not work well. So the particulates in the filter have to be cleansed periodically to stay clean.
How can I remove the particulates from DPF?
The way to remove the PM particulates is to burn PM particulates accumulated in the filter. PM becomes harmless carbon dioxide while it is burned. However, it must be burned with very high temperature: about 600 degrees. DPF does not reach to 600 degrees by themselves even while driving so its engine helps the DPF temperature to be raised to the point that the PM burns.
There is a system to burn PM automatically. Post injection is for sending the fuel to the exhaust pipe directly and it will burn the remaining soot in the DPF. It takes about 20 – 30 minutes to burn the particulates collected in the filter.
However, if it is used for long time, logging of DPF can not be solved by forced combustion only. In such a case, it is necessary to clean DPF. In order to clean DPF, there is method of removing the DPF from vehicle and washing it with water or using the special machine to clean it without removing the DPF from the vehicle. Cleaning the DPF in this way can keep the high performance of engine.
There is another way to reduce clogging of the DPF. It is a method to add additives called DPF cleaner in diesel fuel. When DPF cleaner is added in diesel fuel, the components of DPF cleaner penetrate the particles attached to the DPF, making the particles burn easy. So, particles can be burned efficiently even in the state of normal running which is usually difficult to raise the temperature.
Periodic use of this additive makes particles less prone to accumulate. The fact that particles are less likely to accumulate in the DPF makes it less likely that a failure caused by DPF will occur. Not only that, it also improves the performance of the engine and improves fuel economy.
I explained about the DPF and I hope you understand a little more about DPF and its characteristics. If you have any concern that you do not know about the vehicle, please do not hesitate to contact us!
