All About Trailers!

Today, we would like to share some information about trailers (semi-trailers).
There are several types of trailers with different length and carrying capacity.

In this article, we will focus on trailers which are allowed to run on normal public road in Japan. (Not the ones which can carry around 300tons and can be driven only inside the factory.) We specifically call those trailers as “Semi-trailers”. Let’s check out what kind of semi-trailers are used in Japan!

3 Categories of the semi-trailers
Semi-trailers can be used in so many different kind of situations and can also carry various things. Those semi-trailers are made based on what they want to carry. So, we would like to explain what kind of trailers are here in Japan. I would say semi-trailers can be categorized into 3 different types.

1. High speed trailer
Container trailer, wing trailer, and flat-bed trailers etc. will be classified into this category. Container trailer carries Intermodal containers (10ft, 20ft and 40ft), so there are various length of container trailers from short ones to long ones depending on which container you want to carry.

Flat-bed trailers is suitable for carrying long materials such as chunk of woods, concrete, and light steel materials. Often, those are not able to be fitted on ordinally dropside trailers, so people use flat-bed type as shown on the pictures below to carry those cargos. Left one is the dropside trailer, and the right side is flat bed. Now you can imagine what kind of things you can carry with them?

2. Heavy duty trailer
This type of trailers can carry heavy equipment, heavy materials such as steel materials, steel coil, and trucks. Normally they have triple axles at the rear, although the high speed trailers mostly have double axles. Triple axle can maximize the carrying capacity of the trailer. With this trailer, you can carry 25tons cranes, and even heavier equipment and materials.

3. Special trailers
These are the ones which is made to carry specific cargos. Here are some examples of the special trailers and what they can carry. Pole trailer will carry something heavy and hard to dismantle, like train, trail tracks, or sometime even rockets.

Tank trailer will carry various things inside, for example, fuel, water, gas, and feeds for the livestock.

Dump trailer is another special one. This trailer has more capacity than normal dump trucks.

Benefit of using semi-trailers

So, we have introduced different types of semi-trailers. The reason why we picked up this topic today is because we wanted to tell you that semi-trailers can make your work environment even better.

As semi-trailers can be separated from tractor head, you can detach the semi-trailer from the tractor head and leave it when you arrived at the destination. As soon as you detach the semi-trailer, you are good to go. This will save so much time compared to waiting to finish un-loading all the cargo when you carry with trucks.

Also, another main benefit is that you can carry more cargos than trucks. We believe this is the most beneficial thing about using semi-trailers.
