Things you should know about truck PTO system
PTO (Power take-off) is a system for taking power from the engine and transmitting it to an attachment to be moved. Some truck bodies need power source to be operated, and that is why PTO is installed. If you are not familiar with the PTO system at all, here we have a post all about PTO!
What can PTO do?
PTO is a must for commercial vehicles and installed many types of trucks. PTO enables it to operate the truck bodies etc. with the power from main engine.
Here are the examples of how PTO contributes for truck functions;
Tipper truck: Lift up / down the tipper body to unload the cargo efficiently
Mixer truck: Rotate the mixer tank to prevent from concrete becoming separated while transportation

How is the system of PTO like?
PTO is usually attached to transmission and it produces a power to operate its truck body etc. by converting the engine rotation into Hydraulic system. Following is the 2 different types of PTO systems.
Side PTO (a.k.a. Split shaft)
Most of the PTO are attached to the side of the transmission and taking the power from the counter shaft of the transmission, and that is why it is called “Side PTO”. The main character of this Side PTO is that it can be switched on and off very easily, so it is usually applied to the trucks such as tipper trucks, garbage trucks or fire trucks, which body is operated while the vehicle is not in motion.
Flywheel PTO (a.k.a. "Sandwich" split shaft)
This PTO takes the power off from flywheel of the engine and does not go through the transmission. Thus, the power can be taken off at any times as long as the engine is on move. This type is often applied for mixer trucks or refrigerated trucks, which requires the power either the vehicle is in move and stopped.
Caution and Safety
Although PTO is essential for trucks and their functions, it has also caused many serious accidents sadly. Most of those accidents are caused from PTO shaft to catch the clothes or anything that the operators were wearing. Even if it is the edge of the operator’s shirt, it can cause him/her fatal damages.
To prevent these accidents, now many trucks mounts the plastic protection cover over the PTO shaft.
How about taking this opportunity and check your truck if PTO shaft is equipped properly?

PTO may not be the most outstanding system compared to others, but definitely it is one of the systems which makes trucks so special.
